At Port D, Li Lei lay against the railing, watching the smoke rings he had puffed out slowly climb up the hill in front of him. He wondered if the challenge letter was just a prank. Just as he was feeling restless and impatient, on the verge of turning back, a voice sounded in his ear.
"Yo, isn't that Li Lei?"
Before Li Lei noticed, a blond-haired man in a sharp suit and glasses approached him.
"Zhong Sheng, what are you doing here?" Li Lei hadn't expected to run into his high school classmate whom he hadn't seen in years. He quickly pulled out a cigarette, ready to offer one.
Zhong Sheng waved his hand. "I've got something even better." With that, he raised his right hand, and two bottles of beer filled to the brim instantly captured Li Lei's eyes and heart, making him seem to completely forget why he had come here in the first place.
"By the way, why did you come here?" Zhong Sheng turned his head and looked at Li Lei.
Li Lei chuckled and glanced at Zhong Sheng, then told him the whole story.
"Don't worry about it. It's definitely a prank. You guys are new to the game in Jing City's underworld. Who could you have possibly offended?" Zhong Sheng patted Li Lei on the shoulder and gave him a reassuring smile.
"I think so too. Hey, Zhong Sheng, tell me what you've been up to lately." Li Lei suddenly noticed a small piece of paper in Zhong Sheng's shirt pocket. He quickly grabbed it and said, "Hey, you've become a software engineer? I remember you used to be clueless about computers."
"Eh, it's not a big deal." Zhong Sheng's expression froze, and he looked off into the distance.
The atmosphere suddenly sank into a silent ocean, nearly reaching freezing point.
"Don't just stand there talking. Let's have a few drinks together." After a few cups, Li Lei was a bit tipsy. It seemed like he had completely forgotten about the task Lu Kong had entrusted him with. He put his arm around Zhong Sheng and started pouring him drinks.
"Okay, okay." Zhong Sheng didn't decline. After a few more cups of alcohol had gone down his throat, he got straight to the point without any hesitation. "I say, Li Lei, don't you think taking on this kind of job is really dangerous?"
"Of course it's dangerous, but I'm not scared at all." Li Lei pounded his chest a few times and said with a smile to Zhong Sheng.
"Really?" Zhong Sheng sounded a bit skeptical.
"If I wasn't serious, how could I have kept you here till now?" Li Lei smiled gently and looked at Zhong Sheng, who had a stunned expression and wide eyes.
The recently eased atmosphere froze over again.
"When did you..." Zhong Sheng gritted his teeth, his face turning from amiable to ferocious.
Li Lei loosened his grip, and Zhong Sheng's business card slipped from his hand. Then Li Lei's photo came into view, along with a cold English sentence beneath it: "this is your goal."
Zhong Sheng's face turned ashen, and he gritted his teeth as he stepped back. The distance between the two of them suddenly expanded from a fist's length to a full arm's span.
"According to the norm, shouldn't we have a fight?" Zhong Sheng grinned, his eyes seemingly turning red like they were filled with red ink. It was as if he suddenly didn't care about what had just happened and treated it all as a thing of the past.
"I don't play by the rules." Li Lei finished his drink and slammed the teacup down on the railing in front of him.
A sudden gust of sea breeze blew in, and a knife instantly appeared in Zhong Sheng's hand. He lunged straight at Li Lei with it.
"Two meters, one meter, half a meter..." The tip of the knife finally stopped right in front of Li Lei's face and didn't move any further.
"Sorry, I still can't bring myself to do it." Zhong Sheng lowered his head and turned to leave.
"Jingling!" After a ringing sound, both Li Lei and Zhong Sheng picked up their phones at the same time.
"What did you just say? Xiao Xiao's in trouble?" Zhong Sheng's expression changed dramatically after answering the call. He turned his head and said, "The next time we meet, we might not be friends anymore." Then he dashed off into the night.
At Port A, the silver-haired man was relentlessly attacking Lu Kong. In no time, the previously intact shipping containers were all riddled with holes. But the silver-haired man knew in his heart that these were just things he did to amuse himself. If he really wanted to kill Lu Kong, it would be as easy as pie.
"Let's make this game even more interesting." The silver-haired man grinned like a child. He took off his coat, and a chain sickle that looked like a long snake suddenly appeared in his right hand.
Lu Kong had, of course, seen all of this. Unknowingly, this game of cat and mouse had been going on for almost an hour. Undoubtedly, Lu Kong, who had already been shot, would find it even harder to endure the physical exertion that was to come. Lu Kong knew he had to end this battle quickly. But the silver-haired man seemed to be deliberately stalling for time. He knew that the longer it went on, the more advantageous it would be for him. So he leisurely threw the sickle at a certain shipping container, and by a strange coincidence, it just grazed past Lu Kong's ear.
"Okay, it's time to wrap this up." The silver-haired man took a deep breath.
A strong wind started to blow, and the doors of many shipping containers slammed shut violently, making clattering noises.
"There you are!" The silver-haired man put all his strength into throwing the sickle at a shadow that had appeared from behind a shipping container. There was a clang that seemed to tell him his target had been hit.
"What!" The silver-haired man's sickle was deeply embedded in a heavy anchor and couldn't be pulled out immediately.
"So your name is Dugu Xiaobai, huh?" Lu Kong picked up the silver-haired man's discarded coat and examined it up and down. Then he leaned back and said, "That really sounds like a dog's name."
A burst of flame shot out from Lu Kong's pistol, and Dugu Xiaobai fell to the ground. Lu Kong gasped for breath, looking at him lying motionless with blood spreading out. At the same time, the pain from his gunshot wound flared up again, and this time Lu Kong couldn't hold on any longer. He collapsed to the ground and lost consciousness.
"Hey, wake up! You guys didn't answer your phones. I was worried sick." Lu Kong was shaken awake by a burly man. There were several overlapping images of Li Lei in his eyes, which looked strangely funny.
"Where's Dugu Xiaobai?" Lu Kong straightened up and looked around, but there was no sign of Dugu Xiaobai or his coat.
"Forget about that pretty boy. How did you get hurt like this?" Li Lei took the opportunity to help Lu Kong deal with his wounds and asked.
"I ran into a tough opponent. Based on my guess, his ability is the power of the wind. He can even sense obstacles and the exact coordinates of his targets through the flow of the wind. He's a real pain in the neck... Ah, ouch." Tears welled up in Lu Kong's eyes. "But thanks to the weather forecast telling me there wouldn't be any strong winds around here tonight, I got a hint."
"Okay, okay. Don't talk yourself to death, Mr. Lu." Li Lei looked at Lu Kong and gave him a strange smile.
"Why are you smiling?" Lu Kong said.
"I'm thinking of something funny." Li Lei said.
"Stop messing around. I think Jing Lingxiao has also met with some misfortune. We'd better go find him quickly." Lu Kong stood up shakily and started walking. Li Lei hurried to catch up.
