Chapter 2 Apprentice of the Future

Among the stars towered a pair of loong’s horns, and so vivid those countless tentacles of solar photovoltaic panels!

A pair of transparent loong eyes stared in the distance, unblinkingly!

A huge loong's mouth was slightly open, as lifelike as it could be! Were it not for the spaceships flying in and out of the loong’s huge mouth, one would really mistake it for a real loong hovering around the Earth, protecting this planet from being desecrated by other creatures! Behind the vivid loong head was connected a section of steel body one after another. The farther back it went, the stranger the shapes became...

These youngsters had heard that each section of the body of Dragon Head Fort was a large functional space station. From the loong’s head to its tail, its construction had lasted a span of one hundred years! Over the past century, with the rapid growth of the human population entering the space and the leapfrog development of technology, every few years, new sections would be added and expanded behind the loong’s head. Due to people’s different design concepts, the appearance of this giant loong guarding the Earth, from its head to its tail, was also extremely strange. Sections of loong's body with various shapes combined to form a loong-shaped space fortress that circled around the Earth’s equator!

When it was getting close to Dragon Head Fort, the Swan spacecraft extinguished the blue flames of its thrusters and slowly approached the space station in the loong’s head...

Meanwhile, Dragon Head Fort also opened its huge mouth. A leading beam shot out from the teeth, and directly aimed at the cylinder at the front of the spacecraft, slowly pulling the spaceship into the airfield in the mouth...

At the slightly opened loong’s mouth, there was an electromagnetic light shield used to isolate air. The light shield fluctuated when the Swan spacecraft entered and allowed it to pass safely after identifying the Swan. After the Swan spacecraft fully entered, the giant loong’s huge mouth slowly shut...

Inside the mouth was a world of its own. It was a broad and large airfield where many advanced spaceships were parked in a criss-cross pattern!

After the Swan spacecraft had parked, a lift platform descended from its belly. Dozens of young men and women in white military uniforms stood on the platform, looking around curiously at this legendary Dragon Head Fort. The Mars Base Academy where these youngsters studied was the largest academies on Mars and also one of the top key military academies in the Alliance. Otherwise, ordinary schools had no such ability to arrange so many graduates to work in this human holy land at all.

Among them were coloured people with curly hair and dark skin. There were also white people with blond hair and blue eyes, broad shoulders and tall stature. Yet most of them were still the yellow race with yellow skin and black hair. Among the crowd, a black-haired teenager was particular conspicuous. The other youngsters all looked as if they were eighteen or nineteen years old. Only this teenager was obviously shorter. His handsome face was full of childishness and he seemed to be only thirteen or fourteen.

The youngsters around him seemed to treat him as an outlier. They gathered in groups of three or five. Only this youngest teenager was left alone in the corner, looking around as if he was in deep thought...

People around were gossiping about him, but no one knew exactly the background of this child...

He was noticeably younger than the surrounding graduates, and it didn’t make any sense for him to be here at all! If he was a top genius, he should have appeared on the list of outstanding students at the Mars Academy before. And this handsome teenager was someone they had never seen or heard of before. They didn’t know why he had come to this holy land with them...Because those youngsters had been gifted talents for many years, they could get the chance to come to this holy land. They could recite their rankings on the list as if they might talk about the treasures in their own family. Even as talented as them, without three-year hard study, no way could they take the advanced graduation examination! However, how did this teenager, who had never appeared on the list, manage to be here? It seemed that he must be a beneficiary of nepotism. It was just that no one knew which family has such great influence that they could send their own child here. After all, this place was the Dragon Head Fort, the holy land of human is space!

The guards in various uniforms also noticed the black-haired teenager who was obviously younger than the rest people around him. They couldn’t help but take a few more glances at him and stared whispering and gossiping with one another. The Earth Alliance had a hierarchical division based on positions and contributions, and the hierarchy could be told from the stars on the clothes. There were four major tiers: iron, copper, silver and gold. For the first three tiers, one advanced to the next level every ten stars. After five stars, one loong tooth represent five stars. When gaining ten stars, one directly advanced to the next tier. After engaging in his or her job, one would be issued from one to five iron stars uniformly according to the personal scores. Then, the star level would be upgraded year by year based on military achievements. However, it was not easy to earn the achievements nowadays...

Also, the clothes had distinctions according to occupations and star levels.

For example, the standard military uniforms of ordinary soldiers had obvious differences. The iron star level was for white uniforms, the copper star level for yellow ones, the silver star level for blue ones, and the gold star level for blue uniforms with gold borders! While for the newer, most uniforms were white regardless of the occupations. There were also five-star levels after the gold star. However, it was already extremely difficult to advance the gold star level for blue uniforms with gold borders, and each star after the gold star was even more inaccessible to obtain! Some people might find it hard enough to upgrade even a single star through their entire lives. Even the highest leaders of the four major powers only had the rank of four gold stars. Digging the entire Alliance, only the legendary figure, the Alliance Guide------ Wei Zhengdao, had the highest rank of five gold stars! But he was a legend who had lived for over a hundred year!

The person who could get this unknown teenager into the Alliance’s holy land must be at least a high-ranking official with three gold stars or above. Just as the youngsters were gossiping around and about to step forward and question the teenager...

  “Hiss”!

The largest gate in the airfield opened, and a team of soldiers in yellow and blue military uniforms, holding weapons, walked out. They were in perfect unison, with steady steps. Their resolute and tough eyes showed at a glance that they were well-trained and battle-hardened veterans! The middle-aged soldier at the head looked to be in his forties. He was tall, mighty, and had a solid build. His short black hair stood up like a hedgehog’s spines. There was a hideous scar on his left cheek that ran from his forehead all the way to his cheekbone. Fortunately, the scar just missed his left eye. Otherwise, given the depth of the scar, he surely wouldn’t have been able to keep his left eye.

The blue military uniform on him, washed and a bit faded, wrapped his body neatly and outlined his thick chest. At the rank insignia on his collar, he wore one loong tooth and four dazzling silver stars! Just one more promotion and he would enter the gold star tier!

Seeing the middle-aged man leading the team with such a high rank, these young people instinctively straightened their bodies and reflexively saluted one by one! The man in front of them was a big shot who was about to be promoted to the gold star tier!   Sizing up everyone for a moment, the scarred man said, “Welcome to the Dragon Head Fort of the Earth Alliance. I am Zheng Feng, the chief captain of the Dragon Head Fort. Here, on behalf of the Fort, I welcome you all to join us.”

The major’s rough voice was slightly magnetic, which didn’t match his hideous appearance, but it made the youngsters relief, giving them the impression that this tough man wasn’t as overbearing as he looked. While speaking, he looked over everyone. When his gaze fell on the black-haired teenager, he couldn’t help taking a few more glances. Then he continued, “I believe none of you are strangers to the history of the Dragon Head Fort. It was also the fortress-shaped spaceship that carried all the survivors on Earth and flew into space after the doomsday war. It’s the only base that our ancestors, the Earth survivors, brought from Earth to space! Therefore, all of you should feel honoured and be extremely proud of yourselves for the chance to work and study here, because you are elites in the military field and carefully selected to come here! I am so confident in your abilities. And again, welcome to work and live in Dragon Head Fort!

Well, now follow me to the identity verification hall. After checking your identities, the corresponding personnel will receive you and take you to your respective work areas.”

After that, the other members of the team skilfully divided themselves into two groups, sandwiching the youngsters in white uniforms in the middle. Zheng Feng led the way at the front and the main group followed behind, walking towards the largest gate together...
