Qian Yu caught sight of a banner billowing in the wind, its bold strokes declaring: “The Three Chivalrous Men of Xiangxi”. She let out a stifled laugh, then turned to Liu Chengyuan with a glint of mischief in her eyes. “In Hengzhou, we’ve always known them as the Three Terrors of Xiangxi,” she said, amusement lacing her tone. “And yet, here on Mount Taihang, they’ve been elevated to heroes, parading under a banner of gallantry! Heaven only knows where they found such virtue!” Liu Chengyuan cast a discerning eye over the three figures seated beneath the banner. At the centre sat a man in Daoist robes, his frame so spindly he resembled nothing more than a bamboo cane. His face was deathly pale, and in his bony fingers, he gripped a solid steel mourning staff—a weapon as ominous as its name. His looks, at least, were passable, though his expression remained severe, his eyes detached and unreadable. A crimson garment draped his frame, and—most curious of all—a fresh flower had been tucked into the knot of his hair, a striking contrast to his otherwise icy demeanour. Liu Chengyuan leaned in and murmured to Qian Yu, “These three look most peculiar in both dress and bearing. Do you know from whence they come?” Qian Yu stifled a laugh behind her sleeve. “The walking skeleton in the middle? That’s Lin Zhengying, a corpse driver from Xiangxi. He plies his trade in the counties of Yuanling, Luxi, Chenxi, and Xupu, ferrying the dead to their final rest. The woman to his left is known as Grass Crone. She’s a Miao sorceress, skilled in the dark arts of raising and unleashing venomous creatures. As for the one in red—he is Hua Wangu, master of Falling Blossom Cave. They say that if an unwed maiden so much as glances into the mouth of that accursed cavern while passing through Hua Wangu’s domai
