  A single surge of heroic spirit pierces the sun and moon, as though the long rainbow had transformed into a mighty eagle.  With vast designs to mend the heavens, he wields his thunder-driving whip with exultant vigor.  In lofty discourse his grand ambition resounds, while Heaven itself raises the eastern wind on his behalf.  Now it is said that in the ages of Yao, Shun, Yu, and Tang, their reigns became the models for later sovereigns. When Emperor Xuanzong ascended the throne, he too pursued such ideals; with sovereign and ministers alike laboring with diligence, the Great Tang at last enjoyed good governance and harmony among the people. It was indeed an age of prosperity and clarity, when all the common folk looked with yearning toward the imperial capital of Chang’an. To enter the court and serve in government was both to repay one’s country and to bring glory to one’s ancestors.  In the third year of the Kaiyuan era (715), Li Bai was fifteen years of age, in the very bloom of youth, his blood running hot with fervor. Beholding such enlightened rule, he too longed to journey to Chang’an, to carve out merit and secure a lasting name.
